American composer
John Luther Adams' song "Become Ocean" was published in 2013. The
work is a multi-layered, immersive orchestral composition that tries to simulate
the sensation of being buried in the water.
I was in amazement and wonderment at the music's
magnificence from the very start. The orchestra produced a potent and stirring
soundtrack that gave the music hall a regal and majestic feel. Long, prolonged
tones in the music's slow, contemplative beats seemed to mimic the ocean's
flow.
I sensed myself becoming more and more submerged in
the sound as the performance went on. The song had the impression of taking me
to a strange, enchanted realm. I had the impression that I was genuinely
underwater, surrounded by the enormous ocean, thanks to the orchestra's depth
and space effects.
I had a wonderfully transforming experience listening
to John Adams' "Become Ocean," which left me both spellbound and
reflective. I had a profound respect for the beauty and complexity of the
natural world as a result of the remarkable experience that was brought about
by the combination of the expertly composed music and the strong emotional
effect.
