For this listening Report, I would like to
analyze Basinski’s Desintegration Loop. This particular loop sounds to
me like the sound of the afterlife, a sound that plays in the background while
we are about to leave this planet forever.
Even if it may look like scary, this
composition conveys peace and calmness to me and while listening to it I almost
got emotional, because I thought about all the beautiful things, people and
experiences I lived in my life over and over again; I guess that this happens
when you think about your time is coming and yours on the earth is coming to an
end. Besides that, I find this loop so calm that I think I’m going to use this
every time I need to take an important decision, since it helps me thinking and
reflecting with another spirit, which is far from the chaos we are used to live
everyday.
I’ll come for this song in order to find
comfort, for self-reflection and for concentration. As for the nature of this
song, I think it holds an oxymoron in it: it’s beautiful and tragic at the same
time. There’s something very
fascinating, captivating and hypnotic in this Basinski’s Loop. Although it deals with a very simple loop
without anything really happening, Basinski is taking a very good care of
choosing the right sound to loop and carefully crafting and sculpting it. It
might sound simple, but creating such simple loops and still be interesting and
captivating is a real challenge and there’s no doubt that Basinski has done a very
great Job.
