Hearing Responses for the Hausarbeit
Response
to a piece of work by Glass – “Einstein on the Beach.”
While listening to "Einstein on the Beach" by Glass the first
time, I found it to be pretentious and inaccessible, too abstract and
confusing. While I found it too abstract and confusing, I could understand how
it challenges traditional notions of opera and theater. Its unconventional
structure and minimalist music may not be for me, as it requires extra
attention, but it can be a transformative and unforgettable experience when
willing to engage with it. Throughout the opera playing, I could also
profoundly feel the hypnotic quality of Glass's repetitive patterns. With
"Einstein on The Beach" and its repetitive patterns and minimalist
style, Glass has created a unique and remarkable form of opera. Furthermore, as
my taste is in heavy metal, I could recognize the use of electronic instruments
and how they add a metallic flavor to the atmosphere. Nonetheless, the fact
that it continues to fascinate and inspire audiences and composers today is a
testament to the power of Glass's music and the groundbreaking work of
contemporary opera that challenges traditional notions of narrative and
structure. Moreover, although this opera did not catch my attention, the
hypnotic quality of Glass's music, combined with Wilson's mesmerizing staging
and visuals, can create a truly immersive and transformative experience that
showcases the power of innovative and experimental art. In conclusion, what
seized my attention are the political and social themes that are present in the
opera. The use of Einstein as a central figure serves as a commentary on the
role of science in modern society. At the same time, the fragmented narrative
and non-linear structure can be seen as a commentary on contemporary life's
chaotic and uncertain nature.
