The 2002 release "DP 3" is a piece by American composer William Basinski. The work is a part of Basinski's "Disintegration Loops" series, which he made by utilizing recordings of analog tape loops that were starting to fall apart.
I had a sensation of tranquility and stillness as the
soundscapes started to play. Long, prolonged tones that appeared to hover in
the air were a feature of the slow, contemplative music. The sound had a dreamy
feel since it was a combination of natural noises like wind and water and
synthetic tones. I noticed that I was becoming more and more submerged in the
sound as the installation went on. The music appeared to wash over me in waves,
bringing calmness and harmony to the space. My body and mind started to unwind,
and I had the impression that I was being taken to another place.
The music
occasionally becomes more strong and more frightening, causing emotions of
dread and uncertainty. The selection of the soundscapes gave the impression of
being a voyage through the various emotions we encounter on a daily basis.
I was completely
engrossed in the performance the entire time, my body and mind responding to
the sounds in unanticipated ways. During the quieter times, my breathing became
more regulated and steady, and my pulse rate decreased. We all joined in this
special listening experience, thus I felt a connection to the place and the
other visitors.
